The Baccarat card game, which is sometimes known as Punto Banco (Player Bank), has always had a reputation of being addressed to the richest gamblers. There has been some historic mentioning of games or rituals that resemble nowadays’ Baccarat that date back to times as early as the Ancient Rome and China. For instance, the Romans were deciding the faith of their most important priestesses through a roll of the dice. If the total value of the thrown dice was lower than 6, they would have sacrificed here. A six or a seven would have meant that she would live, but she would not hold the position of high priestess anymore, while 8 or 9 were the only positives outcomes. As you will see in the following sections, this way of counting and adding the value of dices (or cards) is highly similar to what we have in today’s Baccarat. Moreover, the rules of Baccarat identify 9 as the highest achievable outcome.
Going forward to the 1400s in Italy, the game of Baccarat’s was shaping in what we are familiar to today. The game invented by Felix Falguiere was named baccara. In Italian, this meant zero and it came from one of the basic rules of baccara. That is, all the face value of 10s, Jacks, Queens and Kings, is equal to zero. But we will get more into that later on. However, it really became a sensation when the game crossed the border to France, allegedly carried over by soldiers during the Italian - French conflicts. It became such a nation-wide sensation that by the1800s everybody was playing it, especially amongst the nobility. From France, the next destination was across the channel, to our dearest UK. This is where Ian Flemming got into Baccarat’s and transferred his obsession to the world’s most famous player, James Bond.
Now, that you have got a historic context, make sure you dive deeper into the baccarat rules in order to fully understand how to play one of the most popular casino games out there.
So, how is Baccarat played? As noted before, the baccarat rules are fairly simple and that is because the only decision you have to make is what bet to make. You will have to choose from the three options that are available in the game of Baccarat. You have to place a bet on either of the following:
How to play baccarat? Well, after you place your bet, the game of Baccarat begins. A hand consisting of 2 cards is dealt for the banker and another 2-cards hand is dealt for the player.
The main objective of Baccarat is to bet on the hand that has a total value as close as possible to 9. Of course, the ideal is to get exactly 9.
Next, after these two hands are dealt, a third card can be drawn by the player, the bank, or both. However, you don’t have to stress about that; the decision as to whether or not a third card should be drawn is not made by the online casino dealer or you. It is solely decided by the simple rules of Baccarat.
Now, an important step in learning how to play baccarat is understanding the strategy of counting the value of the cards. The baccarat rules for counting the cards in online baccarat are as straight-forward as possible:
Simply put, if the Banker is dealt a hand with a Queen and a seven, the total value of the hand is 7. Similarly, if the dealt hand contains a four and a five, the value is 9. Got it? See how easy the rules of online Baccarat are? Now let us move on as the plot thickens a bit.
The only thing is that the total value of the hand (by adding the two cards together) cannot be higher than 9. So, what should you do when you are dealt two nines for example? You initially sum the value, but you always extract 10. For example, you are dealt two nines. Adding it together would result in 18. But as mentioned before, no hand value can be over 9. So by extracting 10, the final value of your hand is 8. We promise you this is the hardest thing you will have to think about in Baccarat. And the best part is that this is always done by the dealer. All you have to do is enjoy the show and think about the strategy, so you can win some real money from baccarat.
Now that we have laid down the basics, let us get down on how to actually play the game of Baccarat.
Remember, the baccarat rules state that the objective of the game is to have a total as close to 9 as possible. Therefore, if at any point in time the player or the banker has an eight or a nine it's called a natural and no more cards will be drawn. Remember, the banker is not the online casino. It is solely one of two places you can place your bet on. Moving on, the second-best hand is an 8, which is also called a natural. Again, no more cards will be drawn.
From time to time, you will end up in a tie. This happens when both hands, the player’s and the banker’s, have the same value. In this case, neither hand wins and your money is returned to you. So, this would be consdiered a free bet!
Now, if neither of the hands have a natural and there is no tie, a third card has to be drawn. The rules have to be consulted for the exact conditions in which this happens. However, learning how to play baccarat does not necessarily mean you have to learn these rules too. That is because the decision is taken automatically by the dealer. After the third card is drawn, the values are added once more. Whichever hand has a total value closer to 9 wins the hand. If it is a tie, your money is returned to you, so actually that would be considered a free bet as well.
So, you’ve learned how to play baccarat. Now you are ready to bet. What are your options? You can place a bet either on:
Player – For every £1 bet placed on player you get back an additional £1. That means that if you bet £5 on player and you win, you will get £10: the £5 you bet, plus another £ 5real money profit. Of course, when playing online you can find small stakes baccarat tables, where you can bet as low as £0.10
Banker - For every winning pound placed on banker you get back an additional £1. However, a 5% commission is taken by the casino on every winning bet on banker. Still, it is the best option for you and you will see later on why. The commission is taken only if the bet is a winning one. If you lose, no extra commission is taken from you. So, for every £5 bet on banker that you win, you will get £9.5: the £5 you bet, plus another £5in winnings, and from the total £10 we subtract £0.5 in commission. Thus, you will end up with £9.5. Playing the banker bet is the best strategy in online Baccarat. Understanding this strategy already represents a lot of progress in your process of learning how to play Baccarat.
Tie – you can also place your bet on the special tie section. What this means is that you expect the next hand to be a tie. Remember, a tie happens when both hands have the same total value. The payout for a tie is 8 to 1. That means that if you bet £5 on tie and you win, you will get £40. It certainly seems like a lot, but you have some of the smallest chances when you play on ‘tie’. Playing the Tie bet is perhaps a strategy you should not follow in online Baccarat.
Player Pair – you can bet that both cards drawn for the player will be the same. For example two 5s or two 3s. The payout for player pair is 11 to 1. That means that if you bet £5 on tie and you win, you will get £55. Again, your chances are pretty slim of winning this bet.
Banker Pair – It is essentially the same thing as the player pair bet. You can bet that both cards drawn for the banker will be the same. For example two 6s or two 2s. The payout for banker pair is 11 to 1. That means that if you bet £5 on tie and you win, you will get £55. Again, your chances are slim of winning this bet.

As you can imagine, the casinos are not going to let you take all those profits for free. Still, as we have told you before, the game of baccarat has the best margins for the player from all the other casino table games. That means that even with small stakes, you can bring some dazzling real money winnings back home. Now what are the margins exactly, you ask?
The edges in your advantage, for the game of Baccarat are:
As you can clearly see, the Banker offers you the best chances for real money winnings. This means that the casino house edge on this bet is in your favor! But as you imagine, having higher chances does not come cheap. That is why the casinos tax you 5% on your winning bets on Banker, as we have mentioned before. Still, even after taking this tax into account, Banker is the bet you should go with while playing Online Baccarat!
In opposition, Tie offers you just 9.5% chances of winning. Still, the 8 to 1 winning ratio might convince some of you to take a bit of risk. After all, what’s gambling without a bit of excitement at the thought of winning some free real money?
1. Positive Progression. This strategy basically implies that every time you win a bet in Baccarat, you increase your bet value. At the same time, every time you lose a bet, you decrease the value of your next one. What this does is maximize your winnings when you are hitting that lucky streak, and at the same time it protects your wallet when you’re having an unlucky run. However, even if it is efficient, the winnings will never add up to mind-boggling sums.
2. Negative Progression. This baccarat strategy is the complete reversal of Positive Progression. Specifically, when you win a bet in online Baccarat, for the next one you bet with the same value. However, when you lose a bet, you double the value of the next one. In essence, at some point you catch up with all the money you lost and then you go fresh with a new bet. This is an incredibly powerful system, but it quickly gets to relatively big bets, which can eat up into your real money rather quickly.
3. Flat Betting. This implies that whether you lose or win a particular bet, for the next one you do not increase the value of your bet. The baccarat strategy takes into account that Baccarat offers the best winning chances for the player and winning streaks are quite common.
All in all, the game of baccarat is one of the all-time casino favourites. It is easy to understand, easy to play and most importantly it generates a lot of fun.
